Take a moment and return to the resources provided in this section of the Communicate skill and the ongoing exploration of communication practices in the online environment.
How do communication practices in the online environment correlate to effective feedback? Why is authentic feedback important for online learners? In what ways might an instructor enrich a student’s online experience through feedback?
Communication practices are directly and strongly related to effective feedback in the online environment. When the instructor uses a variety of methods of communication such as email, phone calls, bulletin boards, news letters, discussion boards, etc. she is providing effective feedback.
An online instructor does not meet with the students in person every day, as in a regular classroom setting. Unless your
feedback is authentic, you don't have the flexibility to address
misunderstanding of the students' understanding and misconceptions. Timely, authentic feedback is
imperative for an online learner's success.
Using different methods to provide feedback to students can
enrich their online experience. Feedback
should be in a variety of forms, including written emails, graphics, phone calls,
video, or audio. Additionally, the instructor should facilitate discussions
that focus on the learning objectives. The
instructor can start these dialogues by reviewing rubrics and past assessments.
Continuous dialogues between the instructor and students will also enrich the
online learning experience because the students will feel more connected with
instructor and want to be held accountable for producing quality work. Continuously communicating and providing feedback to students will also let students know that their efforts lead to better outcomes and learning.
